So deep and thought provoking, you will treasure it.

Ann Fernandez

This is what I like to call a "Me Book". It's not something I think everyone will enjoy, it's not a book that is fast-paced or exciting (none of these really are tbh) but it's something that really resonated with me and a book I still think about.

This book is about Marin, who left her hometown three weeks before she started college suddenly when her grandfather, the only family she's ever had, dies, and cut off contact with everyone she knew. However, it's winter break, and she decides to stay in her dorm instead of returning. However, her estranged best friend decides to pay her a visit to figure out why she left.

This book talks a lot about grief, of course, and accepting that you're different than the person you used to be, and that people you used to know are different than who they used to be. It also talks about secrets, and mental health, and a lot of other things I feel I'll spoil the book for if I talk about it further. Either way, amazing story, despite it being more a slice of life read than anything.

Nina Lacour's writing is fantastic, it makes everything so vivid in my mind and really paints a picture of what's going on. It also happens to have these well-chosen tones for the different settings (there are chapters in the past and present) where you can feel the happiness and joy from the past and also feel the cold loneliness of the present.

This book made me think a lot about acceptance and moving on from your past to embrace a future you can only hope to be better.
