My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I'll be honest, my hopes were high for this one, and were probably set to fail. I went into Uprooted thinking it was high fantasy mixed with a lot of romance, and while I got a little of each, I didn't get enough to entertain me.

First of all, it was hard going into the novel hating Dragon, which is what I guess we were meant to feel? We are told he steals girls every ten years, does he hurt them? Is he cruel? Nope, he gives them an education, teaches them magic, and then sends them into the city to live independently and set them free from the constraints of marriage and servitude to the patriarchy, which is what would have happened had they not been 'taken'. Dragon is awesome, and it was so frustrating to watch the protagonist resist him and his teachings because she was filled with so much closed-minded prejudice. When you cannot identify with the main character, it's pretty hard to enjoy the rest of the novel.

The pacing was so slow it was almost tedious, when there was action, it was amazing I'll admit. The fight scenes were filled with gore and danger, exactly what I expected from this novel. The rest however, was just boring I thought. There was time for political intrigue, but that was not fulfilled.

I went into this novel ready for romance and tension, but this was not received either, not that there has to be romance to make a good novel, but when you go into a book expecting one, it is quite disappointing when you get maybe one cheesy scene.

I gave Uprooted three stars because although I was a tad disappointed, I still thoroughly enjoyed some areas of the book, I think if I expected less I may have been happier?
I recommend this book to anyone interested in high fantasy, just don't go in expecting a lot!
Ann Fernandez

This was a really lyrical (perhaps a bit flowery) book that is very character-focused as a whole and also had a multitude of dark elements, but never quite went that dark. Overall, not bad, not forgettable, but definitely not a favorite of mine. The plot was incredibly slow in this book, though everything did tie in nicely by the end.
